Depeche Mode announces a tour in 2023 and a new album “Memento Mori”. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore were deeply affected by Andy Fletcher, who died suddenly last May
At the height of the epidemic, members Intercept mode They found themselves forced to understand this global pandemic while trying to appreciate life in every moment. These two themes kept coming back when he was the leader of the confrontation Dev Jahan Singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gor They wrote the lyrics for what would become their fifteenth album. They adopted this idea by calling the album Morey’s souvenir.
” Translation [de « Memento Mori »] he is “Remember that you must die”explains Gahan by phone from Berlin, a few days before the group’s press conference on Tuesday, announcing Morey memorial. “So many songs remind us that our lives are fleeting and we have to make the most of it – in a positive way.” Martin Gohr says he first heard this Latin phrase from a friend. “I thought it was a great album title for songs that were already written”He said.
The origin of this expression goes back to the Greco-Roman era when a slave stood beside a victorious Roman general during his victory to remind him of his mortal condition, and thus he had to remain humble. This idea of humility appealed to Gahan very much.
It’s one of the few times the band picked an album title during recording and held it until the end. The album that producers James Ford And the Marta Sallogni End in London, should launch next spring, while the tour Morey’s souvenir It will debut in North American theaters, starting in Sacramento on March 23 and moving to Madison Square Garden on April 14, 2023.
But before they can even make it to the studio, the title takes on much more meaning for Jahan and Gore. On May 26 Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who had co-founded Depeche Mode and had played synthesizer and bass for the band since 1980, died suddenly of an aortic dissection. Did they question the title after Fletch’s death? “I think it strengthened him, if not more,” Gore said. “Obviously everyone would think that all the songs were written shortly after Andy’s death.”Gore continues. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Sadly, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to start working with us. So I liked the idea of “Memento Mori” in a more positive way, meaning “live every day and make the most of your time here”.
“It’s the first time we’ve done something like this without Fletch.”Jahan said. “All the songs were written before Fletch died, but when something happens, it happens in your life, the songs change: they take different forms and have different meanings when you sing them. I think when I was singing some songs I was thinking about all sorts of things, but it sure was. Fletch comes to my mind a lot.”
“We will not replace Fletch, there is no reason to do so”Singer Dave Gahan says: “It would be impossible”
Even today, the two musicians continue to understand the absence of their companion. “We don’t always have the opportunity to say goodbye”, Jahan said. “However, it was just one of those things where all of a sudden, Martin and I are sitting on a bench in a church together, and Fletch is gone, just like that.”
“It’s obviously very hard to lose your best friend.”Gore said. “Andy was there with me long before the band and I feel like he’s been in the trenches with me the whole time. So it’s pretty hard.” But Gore thinks his companion would have liked the Depeche style to continue. “It has always been considered a group cement”He said. “It was unreasonable for him to think that his death would have led to the end of the group.”
Today, Gahan and Gore feel his loss even more deeply. Fletch, who had a great sense of humor, used to joke that while Gahan and Gore’s roles were well defined – obviously Gahan was the vocalist while Gore wrote the majority of the songs – it was his job to “hang out” with them. But the musicians say he was more important in Depeche Mode than he thought. “When we were in the studio with Martin, we laughed often and the happy memories of Fletch came back to us. We missed him so much.”Gahan explains
“We realized more after his death that he played a big role in the band.”Gore said. “Dave and I are not antisocial, but we are not super social people, while Andy was. If we had to do something, [Fletch] We go over there and start chatting with everyone, and Dave and I can hide in a corner. Even though we’ve been together for 40 years, Dave and I have gotten a lot closer since Andy died, because we had to. Whereas Andy before was, like I said, the cement between us. It was he who brought us together, and it was he who established the connection. »
Gahan and Gore didn’t see each other eye to eye to work on the album until last July. The singer believes that if Fletch had worked on the album, he would have been joking: “Can we stop talking about death?” “I missed it in the studio”The singer says, “And I know that was the case for Martin as well. I felt like he was always with us.”
The band opened their Berlin event this afternoon with a short teaser video featuring close-ups of studio equipment against a musical backdrop, unmistakably Debisch Modine. The soundtrack consists of an impressive bass line and lyrical melody. Eventually, the camera pulls out to show the musicians together in the studio. At last Gahan’s voice came in singing, “We know we’ll be ghosts again”. (We know we’ll be ghosts again)
Neither Gahan nor Gore are willing to tell us more about the song titles Morey’s souvenir – Days before the Berlin event, they weren’t quite sure of the final titles – but they say the album structure as a whole formed naturally. “For me, it has a cinematic quality”Jahan said. It takes you on a short journey, starting with a place where we tell ourselves, “This is my world,” and ending with “How can I make the most of it?” “. Music, Jahan said, It looks sad but is also braided with hope and joy. »
The album will likely contain 12 songs, some of which will be kept as additional tracks for a deluxe release.
In addition to finishing the album, the group is looking for a way to return to the stage without one of the founding members. We will not replace Fletch. There is no reason to replace Fletch,” Jahan said. It would be impossible. There was only one Fletch, that’s for sure. » So Gahan and Gore work with a multi-instrumentalist Peter Gordino and drummer Christian Aigner, who have toured the members of Depeche Mode since the late 1990s, on how the show continued and incorporated new music. (Longtime collaborator, director, and photographer with the group Anton CorbinAlready working with the band on a tour appearance). Contrary to some rumors circulating on social media, the product Rick Robin Not the party.
When asked in Berlin if the band would perform a tribute to Fletch on tour, Gahan replied that the band was still considering but picked some Fletch favorites Depeche Mode. “He will be present in spirit, I am sure he will judge us”He said while laughing.
In another hilarious moment, a reporter asked if the band would consider doing an “unconnected” tour. “We can’t really do that because we’re an electronic band”Gahan replied with a laugh. Gore jokingly adds: “We can try generators or something else.”
In a more serious moment, when asked how they see the role of music in the midst of the war in Ukraine, Gahan replied: “We were talking with Martin recently about how to compose and play music and bring joy and loneliness to a world in turmoil. It’s weird sometimes to be able to do this but to go up on stage and make people happy, we are so proud of it!”
In an unusual move for Depeche Mode, the group will begin their tour Morey’s souvenir in North America rather than Europe. “I don’t remember the last time we started in America, if we did”Gore said. “I’m sure we’ve done that at some point, but it looked different”.
42 dates announced for 41 cities. The European phase will begin on May 16. Among the venues the band will perform next year are Madison Square Garden, United Center Chicago and Twickenham Stadium. For France: Matmot Stadium in Bordeaux on May 31, Stade Pierre Moroy in Lille on June 22, Stade de France on 24 June and Groupama Stadium in Lyon on 4 July.
Until then, they will move on while continuing to mourn the passing of their friend and bandmate. “It was very strange to come to Berlin and enter a hotel where we had been with Andy several times, and see the bar where we often saw him sitting.”Gore said. “It was kind of a reality check. Everything we do from now on is different, so we just have to lower our heads and do our best.”
