In order to mock a battered or slandered husband, it happened that the unfortunate was forcibly lifted onto Donkeyto the sound of musical instruments, and thus was shamefully paraded throughout the village, accompanied by force and displayed under the jokes, laughter and ridicule of the inhabitants.
Louis Vigier made a bitter experience, because he dared to mock the youth of Vilasavari. I took it very badly. The youth and the people will make him regret it at the cost of his pride.

March 6, 1745

On March 6, 1745, Sieur Louis Viguier, dresser of Fanjeaux, made a complaint to the Seneschal of Lauragais “saying that on the third of March, the day of the ashes, at the place of Vilasavare and in the house of Mr. Tolza, the notary, at four o’clock in the evening, to be present at The deed of sale, a band of about thirty persons, inhabitants of the place, armed with muskets and rods, headed by Sieur Picard, a bourgeois, Sieur Roche petty, bourgeois also and the name of Tussauds shoemaker came to surround Mr. Tolza’s house, some of them entered and went up to the flat where the sale was taking place. He would bring Mr. Tolza to ask them what they wanted and tell them to stop the loud noise they were making so that he could work quietly.

To which the community would have responded that they were angry with Louis Vigier. After Mr. Tolza had returned to his office and the deed had been passed and signed, the Attorney General would introduce himself to the public and would ask them what they wanted. They answered him that you only need to go down to the street that we will tell him.
After he got off and left, he would ask them again in a gentle and quiet manner what they wanted from him: Notwithstanding the answer, Mr. Picard, disguised as a judge, had read a certain writing by which he asserted that he was condemned to ride on a donkey.. Louis Viguier replied that he was not one of them, that he was very surprised by such an action, and that his company had called him elsewhere and he would have urged them not to follow their unjust claim.

“good shots”

Far from leaving him, four of them had caught him and with great force and violence were hoisting him on a donkey they intended for him. He went down twice, struggling, but was caught again with a double jab and put on the ass. For some reason he complained that they had badly abused him in the most sensitive place of a man and that they had torn the sleeve of his coat. One named Toustou, who took the word, would impress him by telling him that if he spoke any more, he would wash his coat with good strokes on the bar, so that The supplicant was forced to do by force what he would not willingly do and faced the indignity of being offered the donkey in all the streets of the place. And the Scented with the smoke of pods who had cast him into a trough half-filled with fire (carried by a child) and having finally led him to the village gate, would have drunk him by force and would have banished him, so to speak, from Vilasavari. »

All the leaders of this Charivari are young men between the ages of 16 and 33. In response to a question by the judge, everyone claimed that it was a good prank that was made without violence and with the consent of the person concerned.

Louis Boyer, bourgeois, 16, says that on March 4 “they were joined on horseback by Sieur Picard, Sieur Roche, Sieur Labrogade, Fortagne, Paul-Andrieu dit Tousto, Jean Morel, Guillaume Ajac dit Tarquil, Maynard del Cayenne, Sieurs Astre, and Hyacinth Rigaud who was at Pierre, they wanted to put Sieur Borelli, merchant of this city, on a donkey but when they knew that he had left, it was said that Sieur Viger, merchant of Fango, was in. After they had all gone for a walk, They stopped before Mr. Tolza, the notary, where Mr. Veguer, going down into the street, was told by several of the troops that he had to get on the donkey, to which he reached answered:
Gentlemen, I have a job, please save me!
and the others answered him that he had to go up there, which he did, laughing. After a tour of the village we went to Penavayre (the innkeeper) where we asked him for a drink. After that he drank and then they asked him for dinner. Sieur Viguier thanked them, saying he had urgent business at home, and they escorted him four paces away. They left each other with wonderful displays of friendship and joy on both sides.”

“Gentlemen, who are you crazy?”

Sieur Philippe Roche, a 22-year-old bourgeois, declares that “that day, after they had rejoiced with some of his friends, they went about the place, dressed in Sieur Picard’s robe and skirt, a black skirt. To continue their entertainment, they decided that Mr. Vigée should ride on a donkey.”
Viguier got down from the notary to rejoin the troupe that had asked him and said:
– Gentlemen, who are you angry with?
Philip Roche said: It’s up to you, we want to share the happiness with you, we want you to get on the ass!
Fiji replied that it was too late and that he was on his feet!
We will accompany you, and we will give you horses.
Weger said he didn’t want to go there. But Mr. Picard, having read a certain writing, repeated to him that he should go up there and summoning two peasants who were there, he said to them:
– We have to take him there!
and then one or two of them pretended to take it and Viguier assured him that it was not necessary, that he would go up there willingly and immediately sat on the donkey.
Her sister arrived, and took the guarantor by the hair, who begged her to stop, and neither of them was in a position to pay the kindness, as it was all drunken (drunk), and the young woman kept pulling her. The sponsor said to her while holding her by the arm:
– Since you use it this way, you and I will walk with you and I will be at the head of the procession!
Reberan the Younger came, and took the young woman by the arm:
– Believe me, these gentlemen are not very cold-blooded, something can happen to you, come with me!
Some women told her that she had nothing to fear for her brother.
I followed him. Viguier got on the ass, the guarantor and the others went instead and stood before Sieur Monerie, and Mr. Labrugade after the latter’s shot was fired, said:
-I have no more powder, I must send for some!
Viguier told him it was not necessary, after taking a powdered horn from his pocket, he gave him some and they at once continued on their way to Porte Saint-Pierre and to Penavayre, the innkeeper, where they were, Viguier aiming with the surety and the others.”

“You’re doomed to ride a donkey!” »

Jean-Louis Picard, bourgeois, 26 years old:
On the said day, he was with a group of young men frolicking, walking about, sometimes some riding on the donkey, sometimes others and even a few other people, four of the young men were holding a gun and shooting in the air from time to time. During this time From entertainment, someone saw Mr. Vige and said:
– Here is the mocker of Vilasavari’s youth, he should be put on the ass to teach him not to laugh at him, but, they say, he has work, which he must be left to finish.
When he had finished his work, having left the notary, he asked for the blame, and was told that it belonged to him, and one of them said to the defendant:
– Judge, read! Dressed in black skirts, he read a certain paper after which someone said to Sieur Vije:
– You’re doomed to ride on donkey!
After riding and reaching the cabaret, he got off the donkey and wanted to go away, the sponsor and the others said to him:
How would you, sir, leave us without a drink? Will you be angry with us?
– No, gentlemen, I’m not at all and to show you that I have no grudge against you, though I don’t mind drinking, I’ll drink with pleasure to prove to you that I’m glad I made you happy!
He brought him a drink and a few others did, roasting together.”

The defendants therefore assert, all in collusion, that Louis Vigier willingly gave himself up for the ride. However, the testimony of Bertrand Valet, priest of Vanjos, present at the signing of the act at the notary public, confirms the violence inflicted on Louis Vigier:

They wanted to make him ride a donkey, which Vegeh didn’t want to do, so they took him and forcibly raised him up. When he came down, he told Tousto that he had offended him, and Picard, addressing the crowd, exclaimed:
-He resists! Take the gentlemen and put power on the ass!
Many took him and rode him by force. After Phyguer’s sister wanted to take the animal’s halter to prevent it from walking, Roche threatened her with the bolt of his gun, saying outrageous words to her that she would be placed on her too, forcing Vergès to pick him up and move. away to avoid clutter. One of these carried the launderer under Viguer’s nose, having kindled it on fire with the horns, and then they rode Figuer on a donkey through all the streets of the place and accompanied him to the outskirts of the city.“.

On 23 April, the Senegalese condemned Messrs. Picard, Roch Fils, Fortaner, Boyer, Astre, Paul Andrieux, Jean Morel, Hacent Rigaud and Guillaume Ajac, of appearing before the Bar on the day of the hearing to ask for forgiveness. Insulting Mr. Vige. They will all be jointly and severally awarded 500 pounds in damages and interest to Viguier.
A joke that cost a lot!
As for Louis Vigier, his disgrace was indelible. We can assume he wasn’t looking to make an appearance anytime soon in Vilasavari!
